Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is found outside the uterus. It may affect the ovaries, tubes and other areas within the pelvis.
What symptoms may occur?
- Pelvic pain that worsens around menstruation
- Pain during or after intercourse
- Bowel or bladder symptoms
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Difficulty becoming pregnant
Diagnosis and assessment
Assessment begins with a detailed history, gynecologic examination and imaging when indicated. The approach depends on symptoms, age and pregnancy plans.
Treatment is personal
Options may include medication, surgery or both, depending on symptom severity and plans for pregnancy. Specialist assessment is required to select the appropriate approach.
